Asimov's Science Fiction, March 2011
Robert Silverberg went for his column "Reflections" the book "The Plot Genius" from his bookcase. It was built in 1932 and was written with the intention of assisting aspiring author in search of action. In the book itself, there is a kind of search engine divided into nine elements. Wycliffe A. Hill, the author, called it local or Atmosphere, Character First, The Beloved, a problem Obstacle to Love, Complication, Predicament, The Crisis, and Climax. The apparatus includes a wheel shot, one finds for each element a number in the peephole, which may be interpreted by a list. This way you can brew the rudimentary plot of a story or a novel. The elements must be ausgewaltzt, and you have to write around drum. Like a recipe J Toll, is not it? When I look at some short stories, then have the author, and I do not exclude myself, can use such a mechanism such as this.
In this issue, I think "I was nearly your mother managed "by Ian Creasey. Marian, a teenager whose parents were killed in a car accident, gets visited by a woman who reminds her of her mother. It's the same woman from a parallel universe. Except that she had aborted her Marian. And then was infertile and now by looking for other universes to a daughter. The plot is frugal, focused more on the psychological dynamics between the two. Dialogue, the interplay of emotions that stem from it. Dichotomy of feelings, which Marian is exposed. If they recognize this woman as a mother? It does not succeed. The woman kills herself, leaving Marian the means to seek parallel universes. Marian waived and takes prior to lead their life on their planet on.
